Our best children's and YA books for 2024

In December 2024, the National Library published a blog post titled Our best children's and YA books for 2024, available here. Excerpts from the blog post follow:

National Library Services to Schools staff are pleased to share our annual selection of some of the best children’s and young adult (YA) books published in 2024.

Stories that connect us: family, friends and furry companions

Reading for pleasure is a gift worth passing on, and one of the best ways to inspire readers is by being a reading role model. Your love for books can spark a lifelong reading journey in people around you.

The recommendations on this list come from multiple staff members — our very own reading role models — and each one offers something special for readers of all ages.

Many of the books this year focus on relationships with stories that celebrate family, friendships and animals at their heart. We're hoping that amongst this list, readers will find stories they can connect with. Pernille Ripp reminds us that helping students become readers who love to read isn’t about finding just one good book. It’s about helping them find the book that captivates them, then finding the next and the next. That takes time, relationships and knowledge of books.
